Foundations of Health
In order to be healthy we need to think of ourselves as healthy. You might think this is rather odd but when we shift our mind from a negative thought to a positive thought we can then think according to that positive thought.
Imagine yourself eating healthy, exercising, enjoying the moments in your life. Revel in that positive energy. If you suffer from a particular illness or chronic pain think of being without that illness or pain. Imagine the joy you feel being healthy. Think this type of thought throughout the day, luxuriate in it. If you do this enough pretty soon you will begin to believe it. You may start eating more nutritious food, you may not want to skip that morning walk-you get the idea.
When we envision ourselves in a certain way we will come to act in that way.
- Exercise helps to maintain our bodies, minds and our spirits. When you exercise at least 30 minutes a day 3-5 times/week your mood will get a boost. It can help those aches and pains, help maintain weight, help your posture, strength and help you to feel more self-confident.
- When practicing “mindful” eating you are helping your health. Think about the portion sizes, type of food, what nutrition the food provides for you and how this is a “good” fuel for your body. Enjoy eating slowly and tasting the food which will satiate you more. Think about what you are putting in your body and think about cutting back on toxins and highly processed foods.
- Think outside of your life and consider what doing a “good deed” can do for you. If you are feeling there is too much turmoil in your life or you are feeling sorry for yourself think about doing something for someone else. You will shortly feel good about helping someone else and realize that your situation might not be so bad. You might even breathe a sigh of relief and count your blessings.
- If you are not doing anything in the way of a spiritual or meditative fashion it’s never too late to start. There are proven studies that show that activities like yoga, meditation, visual imagery and or prayer all have the potential to bring benefit to our health and life.
- Last but not least look at the glass half-full as opposed to half-empty. Positive psychology is gaining in importance among professionals. Forgive and forget the stuff that you can, in the long run it will benefit you.
These are all simple ideas but very valuable.
